Domestic violence in Mexico
Article Abstract:
The signing of the Interamerican Convention to Prevent, Sanction and Eradicate Violence Against Women by Mexico in 1995 is an indication that the country may be ready to take domestic abuse seriously. From 30% to 60% of Mexican women in various surveys reported domestic abuse. However, Mexican culture encourages men to control their wives and many battered women have no legal recourse. This could change in Sep 1996 when the Congress meets in Mexico City to consider proposals to criminalize domestic violence and neglect.

Violence against women during the Liberian civil conflict
Article Abstract:
Many Liberian women were physically assaulted and raped during the civil war between Dec, 1989 and Jul, 1997. A survey of 205 women and girls in Monrovia found that half had been the victims of physical and sexual violence by a soldier or other fighter. Those who were members of particular ethnic groups or who were forced to cook for a soldier or fighter were more likely to be victims of violence. Women under 25 were also more likely to be victims of violence than older women.
