Nightmare for sleeping giant: drug makers wakening to price-control threat
Article Abstract:
The pharmaceutical industry, led by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Assn (PMA), is gradually shifting its pricing strategy as it becomes clear that health care reform will force the rate of price increases to stay close to the Consumer Price Index. While it had supported Pres Bush's open market plan, the PMA is adjusting its policy toward Pres Clinton's idea of managed competition. Effects of a possible price freeze on the industry and criticism of high drug prices by the government and the public are also discussed.

Unions want single-payer, will take universal plan
Article Abstract:
The AFL-CIO favors a Canadian-style, single-payer health insurance plan but will take universal coverage with certain cost controls. The labor union does not want the state-by-state, incremental health care reform that Pres Bush favored. Rising health care costs has been the biggest issue among labor unions because it reduces wages and cuts into other benefits. Unions complain that rising health care costs are reducing America's competitive edge.
