Tear opening up in surgery; group addresses general surgeons' concerns about money, identity
Article Abstract:
Thirteen general surgeons have begun sending out $100 membership applications for the new American Society of General Surgeons. The surgeons formed the organization because other surgical specialties are encroaching on their surgical privileges. In addition, some blame the American College of Surgeons, which represents all US surgeons, for not lobbying effectively for higher general surgeon reimbursement during Medicare negotiations in 1992. Forty-two percent of American College of Surgeons members are general surgeons.

Selective Service ponders health draft plan
Article Abstract:
The Selective Service is developing a plan for enlisting physicians and other health care workers in case of war. Certain types of physicians would almost certainly be drafted in the event of a major war. For example, aerospace physicians, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and general surgeons are all likely conscripts. Some groups, however, such as family physicians, internists and obstetricians would probably not even be required to register for the draft.
