Regenerating periodontal support: a comparison of today's procedures
Article Abstract:
Dentists can use regenerative techniques to restore the supporting structures of teeth that are damaged by periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing are a simple type of periodontal therapy. Surgery allows the clinician to see bone defects and tooth roots and to remove disease-producing agents. During guided tissue regeneration (GTR), the periodontist cuts gum tissue away from a tooth root, removes the bone defect, applies a barrier patch, and replaces the gum tissue. The patch, which promotes periodontal cell regeneration, is surgically removed six weeks later. GTR is facilitated by resorbable patches that do not require surgical removal and efforts to develop periodontal cell growth factors. Patients with periodontal disease that causes angular-shaped bone defects may be candidates for bone grafts. Bone may be supplied by the patient or a cadaver donor or it may be synthetic. Bone grafts that use the patient's own bone have the highest success rate.
