Relationship of education to the racial gap in neonatal and postneonatal mortality
Article Abstract:
Increased education among African American women has not reduced the rates of neonatal and postneonatal death in North Carolina. Researchers reviewed infant birth and death statistics in NC from 1988 to 1993. Black children were about twice as likely to die before their first birthday as children of European American ethnicity. Maternal education did not reduce the rates of death in the first month of life, but was associated with fewer deaths in European American children aged 1 mo to 1 yr. Racial disparities may result from differing qualities of prenatal and postnatal health care.

Managed care and school-based health centers: use of health services
Article Abstract:
School-based health centers (SBHC) can provide comprehensive health services to teenagers covered by managed care. Researchers studied health services use by 240 teenagers with access to a SBHC and 116 teenagers with no access. Eighty percent of those with access to a SBHC had at least one comprehensive health exam compared to 69% of those without access. Access to a SBHC also reduced the number of after-hours emergency visits by almost half. Teens with access to a SBHC were over 10 times more likely to go to the center for mental health and substance abuse services.
