Living with loss
Article Abstract:
Estimates suggest that six in every 100 people aged over 65 will develop varying degrees of dementia. Carers of such people often suffer a form of bereavement as they come to terms with the loss of the person they have known. Carers who reveal their feelings constantly speak of guilt, loss, anger, depression and despair, but are often unaware that they are suffering from a form of loss. Nurses who are able to understand these attitudes can be a great comfort to carers.

Taking pains
Article Abstract:
There are many factors for nurses to consider when assessing level of pain, such as whether the pain is chronic, acute or associated with terminal illness. The level of pain should never be allowed to go beyond the ability of the patient to handle it, but people can bear different degrees of pain even for the same conditions. It is therefore important to answer any questions when patients are assessed for pain and to give patients help to control their own pain.
