Evaluation of antismoking advertising campaigns
Article Abstract:
Certain types of anti-smoking advertisements are more effective than others in prompting smokers to quit. Researchers analyzed 118 anti-smoking advertisements and information from 186 focus groups that helped develop the advertising campaigns in California and Massachusetts. The most effective advertisements for both adults and young people were those that discredited the tobacco industry and illustrated the dangers of secondhand smoke. California's advertisements were much more aggressive and were consequently seven times more cost-effective than those in Massachusetts.

Tobacco litigation: issues for public health and public policy
Article Abstract:
Much public discussion needs to take place before Congress passes any laws protecting the tobacco industry from lawsuits in exchange for a global settlement. Lawsuits against the tobacco industry by state attorneys general and city and county officials have blossomed since the publication of the Brown and Williamson documents. In Aug, 1996, Congress proposed forcing tobacco companies to pay $6 billion to $10 billion per year in exchange for protection from lawsuits. However, Congress is financially beholden to the industry and could be influenced accordingly.
