Reports of adverse events from bone drugs prompt caution
Article Abstract:
Patients taking biphosphonates to prevent breakdown of bone were found to be suffering from adverse events like osteonecrosis of jaw which has led to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issuing letters of caution to manufacturers as well as physicians and dentists. Several physicians and dentists are taking steps to prevent osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients who take these drugs whereas researchers are working on ways and means to eradicate the problems associated with these drugs.

IOM: Overhaul drug safety monitoring
Article Abstract:
An Institute of Medicine committee has called for changes in the way the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) monitors drug safety, citing a range of problems including chronic under funding, insufficient regulatory authority, staff conflicts, and poor management. The changes urge the FDA to adopt a lifecycle approach to monitoring drug safety, paying close attention to the safety of the drug from development until the end of drug's useful life.

Studies propose targeted screening of blood for West Nile virus
Article Abstract:
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended screening blood for the West Nile virus should be carried using an investigational nucleic acid test. Scientists believe that testing strategies that only target high risk donors or high risk recipients will be more cost effective particularly as studies reveal not only the high cost of testing the blood supply but the low risk that infection with the West Nile virus poses for most individuals.
