Researchers buoyed by novel HIV drugs: Will expand drug arsenal against resistant virus
Article Abstract:
The research findings presented at the 14th Annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections reported about the two drugs investigation that show promise for treating patients infected with HIV strains that are resistant to existing drugs. HIV experts were buoyed by the preliminary findings from two large ongoing phase 2b/3 trials of an entry inhibitor, maraviroc, which blocks the CCR5 receptor, a protein on CD4 T cells that HIV uses to invade these cells.

Rise in drug-resistant gonorrhea cases
Article Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) suggests an increase in drug resistant gonorrhea cases in the United States in 2003, particularly among men who have sex with men. Increase in gonorrhea cases is due to the practices of relaxation of safer sex, use of some illegal drugs before sex, and the finding of sex partners through Internet.

Researchers report findings on HIV drug resistance, new infections
Article Abstract:
The drugs that are used to treat or prevent the AIDS epidemic are facing a resistance from the virus, which is a cause of major concern for the researchers. The scientists will still further investigate the other treatment strategies, which are less likely to produce resistance when given a single dose.
