The role of cephalocentesis in modern obstetrics
Article Abstract:
Cephalocentesis can still be used to deliver fetuses with water on the brain in order to deliver them vaginally and avoid a cesarean delivery. This procedure removes the excess water from the fetal brain, allowing the head to fit through the birth canal. The procedure may damage the fetal brain, but most of these babies have a very poor prognosis anyway.

Is nuchal translucency screening associated with different rates of invasive testing in an older obstetric population?
Article Abstract:
The impact of nuchal translucency screening for aneuploidy on chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis rates in older obstetric population is assessed. The higher rates of nuchal translucency screening are associated with lower rates of chorionic villus sampling and invasive testing.

Responding to the ethical challenges posed by the business tools of managed care in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology
Article Abstract:
The ethical backbone of the medical profession should govern doctors' interaction with managed care business practices to preserve a level of trust between doctor and patient. The ethical guidelines should include the best possible use of medical judgment, acceptance of self-risk, compassion, and absence of prejudice. Doctors should negotiate with managed care companies to minimize the risk for conflict of ethical interest while maximizing economic efficiency. Some larger managed care companies are incorporating quality assurance clauses into their policies. Some doctors are forming their own managed care groups.
