Presentation and treatment of Hansen's disease
Article Abstract:
There are currently an estimated 300 people affected by Hansen's disease (leprosy) in the UK, with an average of 20 new cases being diagnosed each year. Cases of leprosy in the UK are mainly associated with migration from areas with a high incidence, but leprosy is also seen in people who spent their infancy in high-risk areas. Those with a very high cell-mediated response at the time of exposure to the bacilli Mycobacterium leprae often self-cure, and only a small number will develop clinical symptoms.
