Risk assessments of substance?
Article Abstract:
A number of recent developments have highlighted substantial discrepancies in the competence with which risk assessments for substances are made in the UK. It is clear that the relationship between the government and the food industry can become strained when the Health and Safety Executive intervenes and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) can no longer adhere to the official line. A report in summer 1999 from a team of government advisers indicates that there is potential for an improvement in public health and safety, brought about through better communication between the Dept of Health and the MAFF.

Cases in point
Article Abstract:
Entrepreneurs should consider the monitoring of criminal law a factor in risk assessment management. A slaughterhouse manager was fined 1,000 pounds sterling for adding spinal cords from two cows to other bovine offal intended for animal feed. A landlord admitted manslaughter and was given a suspended jail sentence with a 4,000 pounds sterling costs order in a case involving a faulty gas fire. Additional criminal court cases are included that support external monitoring.
