Article Abstract:

Volkwsagenwerk has carried out research into actual road traffic accidents, which it claims can be analysed with a view to improving passive safety measures. It is important from the view of passive safety that the level of injury of the vehicle driver and passengers and the vehicle's load be ascertained. It has been found that frontal crashes are in the majority, but that when there are very grave injuries there are as many side crashes as frontal crashes.

Safety equipment at the Detroit Motor Show includes increased use of air bags in cars, while environmentally friendly fuel usage is also a new trend. This includes electric cars, following regulations in California on vehicle emissions, and cars which can burn natural gas, or methanol. The low price of fuel generally in the US still leaves little incentive for drivers to cut fuel consumption, however, and diesel cars appear to be neglected as an option.
