Final preparations
Article Abstract:
A consultative document presenting UKCC PREP proposals, requiring new standards of post-registration qualifications, is discussed. The proposals are concerning professionals, who are afraid the training of nurses will not continue to be controlled by the profession. There is a great deal of emphasis on academic qualifications vs practical experience, and enrolled nurses need to find a specialist programme which includes a conversion course before becoming specialist practitioners. There is also concern about the terminology of the requirement for health visitors to follow a programme of no less than six months, as longer training is normally needed, and about the too general or too restrictive areas of practice for community nurses.

Fit for the job
Article Abstract:
National guidelines should be introduced to give nurses pre-employment health checks to assess their suitability for nursing. Mistakes in allowing unsuitable students to start training are costly for the authority and unfair to the student. Parameters should be established to give candidates indications of their own suitability, although health problems would not automatically bar a person from becoming a nurse. National criteria for health-screening would only be a guideline as opposed to a rigid ruling. Current inconsistencies allow some unsuitable applicants to commence training while other suitable recruits are overlooked.

Pages of history
Article Abstract:
Nursing Times magazine has undergone significant changes since the UK National Health Service (NHS) was founded in 1948. However, many of the concerns that faced nurses in 1948, such as staff shortages and the low status of the profession, still exist today. Themes addressed by Nursing Times in the 1940s and the 1950s included the growing rate of patient turnover and conflict between nurses and doctors about the proper role of the nurse. In the 1990s, Nursing Times has been at the forefront of several influential campaigns.
