Safe patient transportation: nurses can make a difference
Article Abstract:
Transporting critically ill patients can present a number of significant challenges. The patient is removed from the safe, resourced environment of the accident and emergency department or the intensive care unit, and his or her life can depend on a limited supply of drugs or oxygen and on portable equipment. If an emergency arises, rapid intervention by a skilled nurse can make the different between life and death. Nurses responsible for transporting critically ill patients should ensure that they are knowledgeable about the equipment used for transportation and that they have access to all the supplies that may be required.

Who wants to be a nurse?
Article Abstract:
The UK Department of Health launched an advertising campaign in Feb 1997 to attract the required calibre of entrant into nursing. The campaign focused particularly on mental health and learning disability nursing, depicting it as a challenge. Enquiries amongst young people and careers advisers revealed that the campaign is likely to attract some recruits, but that other factors may be more influential in influencing the choice of nursing career. These factors include training payments, family involvement in health care, and the depiction of nursing in television drama.
