Samarium-153 lexidronam for painful bone metastases
Article Abstract:
The FDA has approved samarium-153 lexidronam for the treatment of bone pain in patients with cancer that has spread to the bone. Sold under the trade name Quadramet, it is a radioactive substance that is chelated to ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid (EDTMP). It concentrates in areas of increase bone turnover. Several studies show that it is effective in relieving pain and was effective for up to two months in one study. More research is needed to determine if it is more effective than strontium-89, which is also used for this purpose.

Bone densitometry
Article Abstract:
Several diagnostic techniques are available for measuring bone density to predict the risk of osteoporotic fractures. Using dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) may be less expensive at lower radiation dosages than the quantitative computed tomography. Diagnostic ultrasonography is very popular in other countries. DXA analysis of the hip joint best predicts fractures, but heel or wrist measures are also useful. The risk of osteoporosis increases with each deviation from the norm, especially among older women.

Risedronate for Paget's disease of bone
Article Abstract:
The FDA has approved the drug risedronate for the treatment of Paget's disease of bone. Sold under the trade name Actonel, it belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates. It inhibits the breakdown of bone. It appears to be more effective than etidronate, but how it compares with other bisphosphonates such as alendronate, pamidronate and tiludronate is not known. Side effects include joint pain, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
