4,000,000 pounds sterling record fine for pollution

Environment Agency Wales has brought a successful prosecution against Milford Haven Port Authority, which has admitted breaching the Water Resources Act 1991. Cardiff Crown Court has now imposed a record fine of 4 million pounds sterling on the port authority as a result of an incident on Feb 15, 1996, in which the 'Sea Empress,' which contained crude oil, ran aground at St Ann's Head. Some 72,000 tonnes of light crude oil was released over the seven days during which the ship was grounded.

Missing out: 11 billion pounds sterling absence bill for business
Article Abstract:
Research has revealed that in 1997 absenteeism cost UK industry 11 billion pounds sterling, representing a total of 197 million lost days. The survey was sponsored by BUPA and carried out by the Confederation of British Industry. The cost per employee is calculated at 478 pounds, representing an average of 8.4 days. Absenteeism in the public sector was slightly greater than that in the private sector.
