Saved by a bell
Article Abstract:
Mobile telephones should be issued to all community midwives so that assistance can be summonsed in case of assault. Midwives often have to make visits late at night and a telephone link would provide some security and reassurance. Some hospitals provide security guards to accompany midwives on night calls, particularly in inner city areas of places such as Manchester, England. Around two-thirds of nurses have been issued with personal alarms or have been given training in avoiding violence, with more nurses surveyed having been threatened rather than actually attacked.

Fighting for your rights
Article Abstract:
Midwives are increasingly reporting incidents of aggression during their working day, usually from relatives of pregnant women who can resort to physical or verbal abuse. Developing risk assessment procedures would help midwives make formal arrangements when visiting a women where the threat of aggression is known. Midwives are advised to attend in pairs if a violent visit is expected, remain calm at all times and carry mobile phones so any threat of violence can be quickly dealt with.
