Scientists confront cloning challenges
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to find out the genes that are crucial to successful nuclear cloning techniques, which involve replacing the DNA of a donated egg with DNA from a patient's cell to produce embryonic stem cells that can be manipulated and introduced back into the patient. Rudolf Jaenisch, MD, of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Cambridge, Massachusetts, suspects that genes expressed in the nuclei of embryonic cells may hold clues to achieving efficient cloning.

Scientists explore pathogenesis of IBD
Article Abstract:
Researchers are making an attempt to study inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in depth that includes genetic susceptibility, an abnormal balance between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, and defects in the integrity of the intestinal epithelium. The experts at the Third Annual Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases conference discussed the pathogenesis of IBD and potential treatment strategies.

US stem cell research lagging
Article Abstract:
The current climate for stem cell researchers in the United States is falling behind other countries in publishing human embryonic stem cell studies. Without changes in federal policies or expansion of state and commercial efforts for human stem cell research, the United States is likely to continue to lag behind other countries just when this field is in the early stages of its development and is just beginning to explode.
