Scientists probe cancer cell resistance: new insights may help development of new drugs
Article Abstract:
Researchers are trying to determine how cancer cells in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) become resistant to the drug Gleevec so they can develop new drugs to overcome this resistance. Gleevec can be effective for treating CML, but many patients relapse. Many breast cancer patients taking tamoxifen also become resistant. Researchers need more tissue biopsies from these patients so they can determine how the cancer cells become resistant to cancer drugs.

Researchers probe consequences of androgen deprivation for prostate cancer
Article Abstract:
Experts have discussed the adverse effects associated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer and some of the strategies to counter them. Intravenous bisphosphonates such as pamidronate reduced bone loss associated with ADT, while zolendronate actually increased bone density, and estradiol can be used to preserve bone and prevent cognitive dysfunction or improve cognitive functioning.

Fear factor: scientists probe how the mind overcomes fear itself
Article Abstract:
Scientists discussed research on fear extinction at the 2003 annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. Topics include the use of D-cycloserine, temporally spaced learning vs temporally massed learning, and the brain regions involved in the fear response. Fear extinction is the process of learning to overcome fear.
