Screening virtual colonoscopy -- ready for prime time?
Article Abstract:
Virtual colonoscopy can be as effective as traditional colonoscopy for detecting colorectal cancer and intestinal polyps that may become cancerous, according to a study published in 2003. If this can be confirmed, virtual colonoscopy could be used to screen all asymptomatic people 50 years old and older. Virtual colonoscopy uses three-dimensional CT scans, which takes less time and is less invasive than traditional colonoscopy.

Computed tomographic virtual colonoscopy to screen for colorectal neoplasia in asymptomatic adults
Article Abstract:
Virtual colonoscopy can detect colorectal polyps that may develop into cancer, according to a study of 1,233 patients that compared virtual colonoscopy with traditional colonoscopy. Traditional colonoscopy uses a tube with a miniature video camera that is inserted into the colon. Virtual colonoscopy uses three-dimensional CT scans, which are less invasive than traditional colonoscopy and therefore less painful for the patient.

CT colonography versus colonoscopy for the detection of advanced neoplasia
Article Abstract:
