Article Abstract:
Education would result in more organ donations than a national opting-out register. Relatives' anxieties should not be disregarded. A statutory right to use organs of unregistered deceased persons may antagonise the public. Director of France Transplant, Pierre Korman has noted a 30% increase in refusals since the introduction of opting-out. Most people declare a willingness to donate their organs. The emphasis should remain on giving rather than taking.

Opting out
Article Abstract:
More organs could be gained for transplantation by introducing an opting out register. Doctors could assume organs were available unless the deceased had registered their wish not to donate. Few people carry an organ donation card despite their willingness to donate. The scheme would help relieve the shortage of available organs. It would avoid distressing relatives many of whom initially refuse permission in an emotional response.
