Seamless service
Article Abstract:
Nursing in Scotland is set to change due to the introduction of structural reforms. Three reports from the Scottish Office describe how different facets of the Scottish health service will become more integrated, both horizontally and vertically. The aim is to offer a health service which, from the patient's perspective, is seamless. The process will involve greater use of technology to improve treatments and data transfers. The reforms will allow nurses to make a greater contribution to service management, but they will necessitate an overhaul of nursing education.

Innovation in commissioning
Article Abstract:
The development of a new approach to information generation on service quality was commended at the 1994 'Nursing Times' 3M National Nursing Awards. The trial system involved the production and monitoring of a general specification. Detailed reporting requirements were set for each standard and were implemented on a variety of services and on a range of providers. The development of the system is discussed.

The role of managed care in overcoming fragmentation
Article Abstract:
Health service care is unstructured and breakdowns in its management could be detected sooner. Case management provides opportunities to reunify health care systems to achieve a patient-focused, needs-driven based approach. However, care management incorporates a wide range of professionals and the interaction between professional groups and organisations should be identified, defined and managed.
