Second-trimester plasma homocysteine levels and pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction
Article Abstract:
Blood levels of homocysteine should not be used to predict whether a pregnant woman will develop preeclampsia, according to a study of 437 women. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy. Homocysteine levels were similar in women who developed preeclampsia and those who did not.

Plasma ferritin and pregnancy outcome
Article Abstract:
High levels of ferritin in the plasma of pregnant women may predict preterm delivery. High levels of plasma ferritin correlate with inflammation and infection. Researchers measured plasma ferritin and red blood cell levels in 580 poor black women three times during pregnancy. High plasma ferritin levels predicted low birth weight, and at 26 weeks, high levels predicted preterm delivery. High plasma ferritin levels may indicate the presence of placental or amniotic infection. Tests for plasma ferritin are common and fairly inexpensive.

Plasma ferritin, premature rupture of membranes, and pregnancy outcome
Article Abstract:
Increased blood levels of ferritin may predict which pregnant women with premature rupture of membranes might have an intrauterine infection. Ferritin is a protein that contains much of the body's iron. Researchers measured ferritin in blood samples from 223 pregnant women with premature rupture of membranes. Ferritin levels rose as labor progressed, and the levels were higher in women whose newborn babies subsequently developed an infection.
