Self help on CDM
Article Abstract:
A paper on the training of those making contributions to design and planning under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM) has been published. It notes that training should be relevant to the scale and complexity of a project and suggests frameworks to identify competences required to undertake such functions. The HSE believes more work is needed before the CDM field becomes competent, as many designers failed to address the hierarchy of risk.

Net gains
Article Abstract:
The responsible use of safety nets would prevent many of the accidents which occur on roofs in the United Kingdom. Britain, unlike some European nations, has no laws to protect construction workers who work on highrise buildings or poorly maintained roofs. Modern netting materials are inexpensive and convenient to use. They also provide more opportunity for simultaneous work on site.
