Seroprevalence of HTLV-I and HTLV-II among a cohort of HIV-infected women and women at risk for HIV infection
Article Abstract:
Some women infected with HIV or at risk for HIV infection may also be infected with HTLV-I or HTLV-II. These viruses are related to HIV but do not cause AIDS. In a survey of 2,487 women who were HIV-positive or at risk for HIV infection, 10% tested positive for HTLV-II and 0.5% tested positive for HTLV-I. Intravenous drug use, sex with an intravenous drug user, black race and age greater than 35 were risk factors for HTLV-II infection, which was much more common than HTLV-I infection.

Total lymphocyte count, hemoglobin, and delayed-type hypersensitivity as predictors of death and AIDS illness in HIV-1-infected women receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy
Article Abstract:
A study conducted to examine whether total lymphocyte count (TLC), hemoglobin, and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response observed prior to initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) predict post-HAART clinical response, is presented. Pre-HAART TLC, hemoglobin level, anergy to DTH testing, and clinical disease predicted morbidity and death after HAART initiation.

The association of race, sociodemographic, and behavioral characteristics with response to highly active antiretroviral therapy in women
Article Abstract:
A study aims to determine the association of race with clinical and laboratory outcomes after initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in HIV-1-infected women in the US. The results reveal that no significant differences by race are found in virologic, immunologic, or clinical outcomes after adjustment for continued HAART use and depression.
