Serum calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc and risk of cardiovascular death
Article Abstract:
Persons with high serum copper (Cu), low serum zinc (Zn) and increased Cu:Zn ratios face a high risk of cardivascular death. Low serum magnesium (Mg) marginally influences cardiovascular mortality whereas serum Ca has no relation to mortality. Serum Zn concentration decreases with age but the concentrations of Mg, Ca and Cu are marginally affected. The serum trace elements and chloresterol concentration are determined on fasting serum samples frozen for up to three weeks at -20 degress celsius. The intake of Cu and Zn through diet affects serum concentrations of these trace elements.

Serum immunoglobulins and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
Blood levels of some immunoglobulins may be useful in predicting the future onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In a study of 19,072 people who did not have arthritis, increased IgG and IgA levels were associated with an increased risk of RA. Those with the highest IgG and IgA levels had about twice the risk of developing RA. Both immunoglobulins were most recognizable as indicators when seen ten years or more before the onset of the disease. However, this relationship was only seen in patients who tested positive for rheumatoid factor.
