Serum selenium, plasma glutathione (GSH) and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)-levels in asymptomatic versus symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1)-infection
Article Abstract:
The antioxidant defense status of both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals with human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infection was examined. The serum selenium levels as well as plasma thiol and glutathione (GSH) concentrations and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity were measured quantitatively and assessed in relation to clinical stage and surrogate markers of HIV disease. The results indicated that the hallmarks of stages I-III of HIV disease include significant impairments of the antioxidative defenses of the infected individuals.

In vivo antioxidant effect of green and black tea in man
Article Abstract:
The strong in vitro antioxidant activity of green and black tea is due to its polyphenols moiety, and in vivo activity in humans may also be significant. The upper gastrointestinal system absorbs the bioactive components of tea. The inhibition of the in vivo activity by milk may be caused by the resistance to gastric hydrolysis developed by the milk protein-tea polyphenols complex. The implications for the role of dietary polyphenols in mediating oxidative stress are discussed.
