Severe malaria
Article Abstract:
Malaria parasites cause different illnesses in different people. The Plasmodium flaciparum malaria parasite causes severe disease in some people. It is also thought that there are different strains of P. falciparum. An individual's immunity also affects the intensity of the disease. Persons can build up an immunity over the years. Others are genetically protected from the severe affects of the parasite.

Malaria in emergency situations
Article Abstract:
Political and military actions may cause refugees fleeing armed conflict, with little or no immunity to malaria, to move into high-transmission areas. The effects of the disease could be more devastating on the refugees than on the local residents. The refugees are among the most vulnerable populations in the world. Major outbreaks may occur when large, sudden influxes of people are unsettled.

A vaccine for malaria?
Article Abstract:
Progress has been made during the past ten years in the search for a vaccine for malaria. Malaria is a major public health problem worldwide. Mosquitos are resistant to insecticides and malaria parasites are resistant to drugs. Old and new drugs and controls are being used. An effective vaccine would be a welcome addition to those measures.
