All mouth
Article Abstract:
The mouth is vulnerable to the effects of systemic disease and to a range of local conditions which can lead to illness in other parts of the body. Nurses must be aware of these issues in the care of patients who are unable to help themselves, and should form part of a multidisciplinary approach to recognition and treatment. Conditions affecting the mouth include gingivitis, oral thrush, and aphthous ulcers. Cardiovascular disease, HIV infections and drug treatments may have oral symptoms, and mouth tumours are particularly serious due to the ease of metastasis.

Malaria: a scourge of humankind
Article Abstract:
One of the most deadly of all diseases known to man is malaria, which kills up to 2.7 million people each throughout the world. Malaria is passed to humans by mosquitos which carry the malaria parasite. The parasite travels to the liver where they mutate and eventually enter the blood stream, causing fever, headaches, excessive thirst and possible death. Using insecticide pregnated mosquito nets could have a drastic impact on the number of reported cases in sub-Saharan regions of the world.

Death from tetanus will have affected 8 million babies whose mothers had not been immunized, and 2 million children and adults, mainly in developing countries, in the 1990s. The main victims in developed countries are the elderly who have not been recently immunized. Sufferers need to be held in an intensive care unit, with a focus on their airways and ventilation.
