Sexual Behaviors and Reproductive Health Outcomes: Associations With Wife Abuse in India
Article Abstract:
Many men in northern India abuse their wives and this may lead to increased rates of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies. In a survey of 6,632 married men in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, about half of the men said they abused their wife. Thirty percent reported sexual abuse with or without physical force. Men who were having extramarital sex were more likely to be abusive. Many of the men having extramarital affairs also had a sexually transmitted disease, which they might pass on to their wife. Unplanned pregnancies were more common among wives of abusive men.
