Restructuring of the National Health Service (NHS) is taking place in London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Birmingham and Belfast, UK, and the nursing profession should be ready for further changes. Restructuring is threatening services and jobs. In London, UK, nursing staff are worried that services will be cut, and hospitals will be merged, to make way for improved services in the community, according to Jo Carroll, Tower Hamlets Royal College of Nursing (RCN) delegate. District nurses are having to deal with a 40% rise in patient numbers in London. In Belfast, there is a rumour that almost 2,500 redundancies will be made, according to Margaret Jackson, RCN convenor for W and N Belfast.

A sobering focus
Article Abstract:
Awareness is growing that children of parents who misuse alcohol are in need of help too. The chance of children misusing alcohol is one-in-two, if their parents also misuse it, compared with the national average of one-in-three. British industry loses about 8 million working days each year from alcohol-related problems, costing 1.7 million sterling pounds annually, according to a government report about alcohol misuse. Of the adult population, 93% drink alcohol. The new organisation, Support for Children of Adult Drinkers, set up in Worcester, UK, to help children of alcohol misusers is also discussed.
