Shock absorbers
Article Abstract:
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) probably causes three deaths a year in the UK. Medical research continues to study the problem, and campaigns continue to highlight the issues, although the incidence of TSS dropped following the withdrawal of a brand of highly absorbent tampons in 1980. TSS is caused by a toxin secreted by a bacterium, and most people develop their own antibodies to the toxin. Males and non-menstruating females account for half of the cases of TSS, but there is a clear association of TSS with tampon use. Advice to minimize the risk associated with tampon use is included.

Article Abstract:
Many UK nurses feel that they have not been given a proper role in the consultation process for the creation of primary care groups (PCGs), which will begin operating in Apr 1999. Indeed, only 5% of nurses feel that they have been involved as equally as GPs, according to the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association. Nursing organizations are concerned that PCGs, which will be responsible for improving the health of their local population, will become dominated by a medical model focusing on purchasing health care and prioritizing demand and treatment.

Article Abstract:
UK ward manager Jitendra Tirbhowan used his skills in communication and human resource management to turn around an over stretched acute psychiatric inpatient ward to patient-focused care. Tirbhowan has been recognized for his hard work and dedication by being nominated as the winner of the 1999 Foundation of Nursing Studies for those in charge of wards. Much of Tirbhowan's success lies in his support for his colleagues, enabling staff to approach him if there were problems.
