Article Abstract:
Physicians may need to band together as a political force to regain educational funding in medical schools. Economics are increasingly determining the selection of obstetrics and gynecology as a career by medical students. Cutbacks in medical insurance reimbursement are limiting the funds available to medical schools for education. The rise of managed care and its capitation of physician and hospital reimbursement has changed medical practice, hours, and physician autonomy. Such factors influence the career decisions of prospective physicians, and these factors may determine who will enter the field of medicine in the future.

Timing of scheduled cesarean delivery in patients on a teaching versus private service: Adherence to American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines and neonatal outcomes
Article Abstract:
The differences in adherence to American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) guidelines for the timing of scheduled cesarean delivery for patients on a resident teaching service and patients on private services are compared to determine the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission rate and the most frequent admission diagnosis after scheduled cesarean delivery. The results are assessed to determine whether any changes in practice could be instituted to minimize the need for NICU support after scheduled cesarean delivery, thus improving outcomes and reducing health care costs.

Effects of obstetrician characteristics on cesarean delivery rates: a community hospital experience
Article Abstract:
Many obstetricians can lower their cesarean delivery rates. At one hospital, some obstetricians lowered their cesarean delivery rate 44% compared to the average departmental reduction of 5%. Younger doctors in a group practice were most likely to lower their rate substantially.
