Sildenafil: an oral drug for impotence
Article Abstract:
Sildenafil citrate, marketed by Pfizer as Viagra, seems effective for short-term correction of erectile dysfunction. It is the first oral drug the FDA has approved for this purpose. Sildenafil causes release of nitric oxide, beginning a process which relaxes smooth muscle and allows erection to take place between 30 minutes and four hours after ingestion. It lowers blood pressure which may be a problem in some patients, especially those using nitrate-based medication. In tests, 63% to 82% of the patients had positive response, depending on dosage amount.

Data also reveal side effects of these antioxidants with 8.3% incidence of yellow skin in non-smoking patients, whereas smokers developed lung cancer and even met with death.
