Single and repetitive maternal glucocorticoid exposures reduce fetal growth in sheep
Article Abstract:
Corticosteroids used during pregnancy may cause fetal growth retardation. These drugs are used to prevent premature birth and its complications. Researchers gave pregnant sheep one dose of betamethasone at 104 days' gestation, three doses at 104, 111, and 118 days, or saline solution as the control. Lambs were delivered prematurely at 125 days or at term at 145 days. Even the single dose was associated with fetal growth retardation and the multiple doses inhibited growth even more. This effect persisted at birth even in lambs born at term.

Differential effects of maternal betamethasone and cortisol on lung maturation and growth in fetal sheep
Article Abstract:
The hormone cortisol may not help a baby's lungs mature when given to pregnant women in premature labor, according to a study in sheep. Normally, these women are given a corticosteroid drug such as betamethasone or dexamethasone. However, betamethasone and dexamethasone can stunt the baby's growth. For this reason, some doctors recommend using cortisol.

Single and multiple prenatal glucocorticoid exposures improve preterm newborn lamb cardiovascular and renal function
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on preterm newborn lamb cardiovascular and renal function. The athors have investigated the hypothesis that multiple betamethasone exposures would improve renal and cardiovascular adaptation.
