Single-payer, not play-or-pay, best for health reform: House Democrats say in survey
Article Abstract:
Democrats in the House differ over the direction of health reform. The play-or-pay system favored by the party leaders received only 27% first-place votes in a poll of 98 congressmen, while 43% liked a single-payer national insurance system best. Everyone would be covered under a nationalized system proposed by Rep Marty Russo. The Democratic leadership has a Health America bill in the Senate in which employers would either provide employee coverage or pay into a public insurance plan. The play-or-pay plan has received more opposition because single-payer has just begun to be considered as a serious option.

Embattled insurers fight for survival
Article Abstract:
Health insurers are concerned that impending US health care reform may put them out of business if a government-run system is instituted. If such a plan is implemented, large insurers may attempt to create a role for themselves in helping to administer it, but small companies would be driven out of business. The Health Insurance Assn of America angered small firms when it released a draft reform plan designed to give the impression that the insurance community is open to major reform. However, several large companies have quit the group because they think its policies too conservative.
