Surgeons' aim: fewer hip fractures, less 'seat-belt' syndrome
Article Abstract:
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the National Osteoporosis Foundation issued a joint statement at the surgical organization's annual meeting calling for increased federal research funding aimed at decreasing the number of people who suffer from debilitating hip fractures. In addition, the AAOS called attention to severe injuries suffered by children wearing lap seat belts, riding on lawn mowers and playing on the playground. For example, 250,000 children sought emergency medical care due to injuries sustained on playgrounds during 1991.

Save the children; pediatricians tackle the health crisis in the nation's classrooms
Article Abstract:
The American Academy of Pediatrics sponsors a voluntary program called CATCH, Community Access to Child Health, because of the tragic lack of health care for school children. For instance, teenage pregnancy contributes heavily to crime and drains health care funds. Included are examples of pediatricians who make a difference, such as Dave Kaplan, who opened preventive-health clinics for high school students in Denver, CO.
