Sixth sense
Article Abstract:
A nurse describes the recovery of a patient who has had surgery for cancer of the colon and has been fitted with a stoma. To all appearances she is making good progress and has a very positive attitude towards her condition. However, on one occasion the nurse's intuition tells her that all is not well, and she finds the patient in deep distress. While intuitive judgements are sometimes dismissed they are often a very valuable part of nursing.

The hidden power
Article Abstract:
Health managers undervalue intuitive nursing. Intuitive nurses are usually expert and confident practitioners who take a holistic approach to patient care. However, modern emphasis is on high-technology and care planning documentation. Management has failed to recognise intuitive practice because of an inability to quantify it. Intuitive managers are necessary for encouraging reflective practice.

The twilight zone
Article Abstract:
Care of the elderly should be improved. Long-term care is being provided by actual institutions. Routine is all-important there, with elderly patients being made to get up at six or seven in the morning. Some patients become depressed after being put in a home. Nurses who care about the elderly can only help improve their lives a little.
