Smallpox immunization in the 21st century: the old and the new
Article Abstract:
The June 25, 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) contains four reports about the smallpox vaccination campaign of 2003. As of May, 2003, over 450,000 armed forces personnel have been vaccinated. The rate of adverse effects was low, but included 18 cases of a heart disease called myopericarditis that was caused by the vaccine. Another report showed that people who were vaccinated back in the 1960s and 1970s could be re-vaccinated.
