Sniffing out new approaches to spinal cord repair
Article Abstract:
Using olfactory ensheathing glia to treat spinal cord injury may be successful in rats but not in humans. These glia protect newly formed olfactory neurons, which constantly die and are replaced. But sufficient quantities of glia could never be harvested from the olfactory bulb of humans to treat a large spinal cord injury.

Osteoprotegerin blocks bone cancer-induced skeletal destruction, skeletal pain and pain-related neurochemical reorganization of the spinal cord
Article Abstract:
Research on osteoprotegerin show that bone pain in cancer patients is caused by destruction of bone tissue. Osteoprotegerin is a soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor family molecule that can block this destruction and thereby prevent bone pain.

Easing the brakes on spinal cord repair
Article Abstract:
Permanent paralysis strikes due to inability of axons to regenerate in the injured spinal cord. The discovery and cloning of Nogo, one of the axon growth inhibitors in myelin, was a major step in understanding the failure of axon regeneration.
