Open to scrutiny
Article Abstract:
Nurses working at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, UK, feel they have been unfairly treated by the media and public after revelations of bad surgery practise by two surgeons carrying out heart surgery on small children and babies came to light in 1995. Many nurses have had to give evidence at the inquiry which was established to look into the causes behind the deaths of almost 20 babies undergoing heart surgery. The case highlights the increasing pressures faced by nurses in the National Health Service.

Bills of health
Article Abstract:
The government's NHS Bill will end GP fundholding, establish primary care trusts and create a Commission for Health Improvement, as well as strengthening existing professional regulation bodies. It wants to ensure that the nurses regulatory body is open, responsive and publicly accountable, which could mean major changes for the UKCC. The Fairness at Work Bill is expected to revolutionize industrial relations within GP practices.

Counting the cost of a car
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom National Health Service car schemes are criticized for being confusing and inadequate. Community nurses who use the leased car scheme have to pay the highest rate of tax because they travel less than 2,500 miles per annum. The lease scheme is based on an outdated reimbursement arrangement, say many. Some choose to travel in their own car to avoid high lease car insurance premiums.
