Somalia's death toll underlines challenges of post-cold war world
Article Abstract:
Over 1,000 Somalians died of starvation and disease each day during the month of Oct 1992. Participants at a gathering of relief agency officials, United Nations (UN) representatives and physicians discussed the reasons for the delayed public response to these events. There is a civil war in Somalia, and many food shipments have been appropriated by armed rebels. Relief workers in Somalia have not been protected from the warfare, and some physicians working there have been forced to treat the rebels instead of the civilians. The UN's response has been complicated by the fact that the organization has few guidelines for dealing with countries that have no recognized government. News media coverage has also been inadequate. The US needs to develop consistent guidelines for providing humanitarian aid, and US physicians should be encouraged to spend some time abroad.

Global health -- targeting problems and achieving solutions
Article Abstract:
The Journal of the American Medical Association will publish a special issue about the health problems of people living in developing countries. Although many gains have been made, poverty and hunger are increasing and life expectancy is falling. Eight million premature deaths could be prevented worldwide each year by focusing on AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, childhood infectious diseases, maternal and prenatal health, tobacco-associated diseases, and nutritional deficiencies.
