Article Abstract:
A pilot scheme to improve patient handling practice successfully introduced safe handling techniques in a psychiatric hospital long-term care ward. The scheme aimed to improve patient comfort and introduce safe practice. Charts recording patient mobility facilitated individual assessment. An assessment of ward layout resulted in the introduction of mobility aids. Patients were encouraged to take their own weight where possible although hoists were introduced for the totally dependent. Within six months unnecessary lifting had been eliminated. Some patients had developed greater mobility.
