Protocols and emergency nurse practitioners
Article Abstract:
Staff at the Norfolk and Norwich Health Care NHS Trust, England, set up protocols in 1996 which enabled emergency nurse practitioners in the Accident and Emergency Unit to prescribe and administer a range of drugs. Emergency nurse practitioners received special training, and an audit system was established. Nurses were initially resistant to the scheme, but now express positive opinions. The system makes effective use of staff resources and reduces waiting time for patients. The protocol for paracetamol is included.
