Specific immune response against Gardnerella vaginalis hemolysin in patients with bacterial vaginosis
Article Abstract:
Testing for an immune response to a substance produced by Gardnerella vaginalis may prove helpful at diagnosing active infection in cases of bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is a shift in the types of bacteria that normally live in the vagina. Infection is associated with premature birth and uterine infections in pregnancy. Researchers tested vaginal fluid samples in 123 women for a response to a protein secreted by G. vaginalis, a bacterial strain universally found in bacterial vaginosis, during active infection. Samples from 60% of women with bacterial vaginosis reacted versus 19% of women with intermediate bacterial populations.

Variation in vaginal immune parameters and microbial hydrolytic enzymes in bacterial vaginosis positive pregnant women with and without Mobiluncus species
Article Abstract:
The variation in the levels of interleukin-1beta (IL-1[beta]), IL-8, sialidase prolidase and immunoglobulin A against Gardenerella vaginalis hemolysin (anti-Gvh IgA) in vaginal secretions between BV+ women with (M+) and without (M-) Mobiluncus spp. are assessed. The results have shown that BV+/M+ women have higher vaginal concentrations of sialidase and lower rates of Trichomonas vaginalis compared with BV+/M- women.

Neighborhood context and reproductive health
Article Abstract:
The empiric data that examines the association between the neighborhood conditions and reproductive health are reviewed. The major challenges that researchers face when trying to incorporate neighborhood-level variables into studies of health outcomes and by considering social, economic, and biologic determinants of reproductive health are discussed.
