Evaluating dental office ergonomic risk factors and hazards
Article Abstract:
Many of the duties routinely performed by dental hygienists may pose only moderate or lower ergonomic risk of injury. Researchers measured muscle electrical activity and hand and wrist posture in 15 dental hygienists during dental treatment. Hygienists spent 50% of their time scaling teeth and 25% of their time polishing. Scaling, polishing, flossing and probing produced moderate muscle ergonomic risk and low-to-moderate posture risk. Hygienists spent very little time during most functions performing tasks with a high risk of injury.
