Sterile arguments
Article Abstract:
Glutaraldehyde is a substance used to sterilise delicate instruments that cannot undergo heat treatment, but it is also a hazardous substance, which is linked to headaches, irritation of the lungs, and skin problems. Despite evidence of its dangers, and indeed, legal action underway by nurses over asthma alleged to be linked to its use, the substance is still employed where other, safer, products could replace it. An educational campaign is being undertaken, but there should be more awareness of this problem.

OH nurses as business consultants
Article Abstract:
The traditional role of occupational health (OH) nurses in the workplace is being challenged by the Association of OH Nurse Practitioners, who believe OH nurses should regard themselves as an asset to corporate value. Too many OH nurses are reluctant to expand the role of health adviser within a company, according to nurse consultant Christine Owen, who sees occupational health as contributing to the financial and social well-being of a company.

Health focus: every which way but ..
Article Abstract:
Some OH nurses believe that there will be a new wave of OH advisers who have no background in nursing, because of the Occupational Health and Safety Lead Body's (OHSLB) emphasis on competences. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the UK Central Council (UKCC) wants to strengthen OH nurses connections with community nursing, while the OHSLB wants OH nurses to share learning with hygienists and safety officers.
