Store wars
Article Abstract:
Supermarkets now offer very competitive rates for people with cheque accounts. Sainsbury gives 5% interest, Tesco and Safeway are similar, and for amounts over 1,000 pounds sterling, the rate can be 7% or more. Consumers also have the convenience of 24 hour banking facilities, they can combine shopping and banking in one trip and supermarkets are safe places to conduct money transactions. Traditional banks, which offer only around 0.25%, are planning to offer better services to compete with the supermarkets.

Taxing questions
Article Abstract:
The high financial risk associated with being a self-employed nurse means many building societies and banks are unwilling to lend money for a mortgage, although a new scheme has been introduced by the Britannia Building Society which will lend up to 85% of the properties value. Self-employment taxation benefits some nursing staff because they can claim expenses for in effect running a small firm. All receipts must be retained to show prove of expenditure when claiming back expenses.
