Strategic thinking about gun markets and violence
Article Abstract:
Many US cities are attempting to reduce the homicide rate from guns in their communities. Although many Americans support the Constitutional right to own a gun, they also support laws that restrict gun ownership by young people. Some of the most successful laws are those that attempt to reduce illegal gun trafficking. Most young people do not buy guns from legal dealers but steal them or buy them from illegal dealers. This could be more difficult now that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has significantly reduced the number of licenses it issues. New York City police have been somewhat successful in getting illegal guns off the streets, which has allegedly reduced the city's homicide rate. However, these aggressive moves could alienate residents. A more successful approach might involve discouraging kids from owning guns. Law enforcement officials also need better crime tracking systems that include detailed information about the weapon used as well as other aspects of each crime.

Traffic safety experts prescribe treatment, sanctions to improve driving
Article Abstract:
People's driving behavior can be changed by stricter laws, increased enforcement, alcohol and drug dependence treatment, and attention to lifestyle habits that encourage accidents. Efforts should be directed to drivers who continue to operate vehicles while under the influence. Some states have lowered the blood alcohol legal limit. New Mexico uses sobriety checkpoints to discourage drunk driving. Driving while drowsy is a lifestyle habit that can cause accidents. A greater threat of losing one's driver's license can also affect driving safety behavior, according to driver surveys.
